Thrifty Living Tip of the Month

In between work, homeschooling the kids, zoom meetings and family time it’s almost impossible to eat healthy. You've never experienced shopping for groceries on such a consistent cycle. Some, if not most families settle for fast food. Maybe you push a little harder and do sandwiches. You're trying to get it all done on schedule. Your role as wife, mom, employee, friend and nurturer has never been questioned like the present. Hold up! Are you the one judging yourself because you forgot to take the meat out to prepare dinner?

I want to invite you to give yourself some grace. This is all new for you and it didn't come with a manual. You've been balancing a lot and so far you're doing a great job. Take care of your mindset so you can handle your day's activities with less anxiety. Go for a walk, enjoy a cup of coffee, go to bed earlier than usual, enjoy your favorite Netflix show, lock yourself away in the bathroom, (desperate time calls for desperate measures) or, run yourself a warm bath.


Now that your mindset is relaxed, back to you forgetting to take the meat out of the freezer. Solution? Bread. You do not have to be an expert or chef. If you have the needed ingredients in your kitchen and an oven you can work miracles.

You can save money if you bake your own bread. Home made bread ain't never kill nobody, I checked! Store-bought bread contains many preservatives, unneeded sugars, and other chemicals. Even whole wheat bread! Read the ingredients. Surprisingly, you can eat healthier, cheaper, and tastier bread from your own oven. Plus, it’s not a nearly as time-consuming as you might suspect!

Basic Homemade Bread

Ingredients:

✴ Flour

✴ Sugar

✴ Butter

✴ Milk

✴ Salt

✴ Water

✴ Yeast

As you can see, most of these ingredients are already in your kitchen. Yeast is usually available in the baking isle in packets or jars. Compare this ingredient list with the one on your bread package from the store. You actually pay for all those chemicals that you don’t even want!

Without a bread machine, homemade bread will take about two and a half hours. Two of these hours are just letting the bread rise, giving you spare time for: exercise, dishes, vacuuming, kids, or whatever else your daily life includes. Now, who said bread making was a long, arduous process?


With a bread machine the process is even easier! Toss in the ingredients before bed, and then have freshly baked bread the next morning. Bread machines can even be found at fairly inexpensive prices, especially at discount retailers like Wal-Mart, Costco, or Amazon.com!


Information can be easily found online about home bread making. In fact, there are hundreds of recipes that you can adapt to your own tastes.

Take the time today to make a loaf of homemade bread. After one taste, you’ll probably never go back to buying high-priced, unhealthy bread at the store! Your family – mindset and budget – deserve it!
